There is a precise moment when a motorcycle journey leaves ordinary adventure travel behind. Moreover, it enters the realm of raw Himalayan overland exploration.
On the track to Manang, that shift happens the instant your front wheel leaves Besisahar. It climbs directly into the vertical cliff-cut trails of the Marsyangdi River gorge.
Spanning nine days through deep river canyons, lush pine gorges.
Riding to Manang is one of Nepal’s premier dual-sport motorcycle adventures.
This guide breaks down the full experience, from suspension-testing river crossings.
Additionally, it covers high-altitude loops beneath Annapurna II, Gangapurna Lake, and the alpine ridges of Khangsar.
Trip Quick Facts: Manang Valley Moto Tour
- Total Duration: 9 Days (Kathmandu to Manang loop)
- Max Altitude on Wheels: ~3,750 m (Khangsar ridgeline & Upper Pisang trails)
- Terrain Split: 40% Highway / Paved Road, 60% Unpaved Off-Road (loose scree, riverbeds, bedrock steps, high-altitude gravel)
- Best Seasons: Autumn (September to November) for razor-sharp skies; Spring (March to May) for clear trails and mild temps
- Recommended Fleet: Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, Honda CRF300L, KTM 390 Adventure, or equivalent dual-sport bikes
1. The Gateway: Besisahar to the Chame Gorge
The adventure starts where the blacktop ends. Once past Besisahar, the Marsyangdi gorge closes in fast. The track here isn’t a leisurely cruise. Moreover, it is an active jeep trail carved from granite walls, with drops plunging into the raging river below.
- The Riding Dynamic: You spend hours standing on the footpegs, reading lines through wet switchbacks, crossing cascading waterfall runoffs, and navigating loose shale.
- The Atmosphere: Humid subtropical forest slowly yields to sub-alpine conifer woodland as you climb toward Chame (2,670 m).
- Trail Check: Keep a smooth hand on the throttle through the wet rocky shelves—water crossings here can be deceivingly slick.

2. Into the Rain Shadow: Chame to Upper Pisang & Manang
Leaving Chame, the transformation in geology is dramatic. Within just a few hours, the dense pine forests thin out dramatically as you ride past the massive curved face of Paungda Danda rock.
Suddenly, the valley splits wide open into the arid, Tibetan-influenced high desert of the Annapurna rain shadow.
- The Route via Upper Pisang: Instead of sticking strictly to the lower transit road, climbing toward Upper Pisang puts you face-to-face with the immense north wall of Annapurna II.
- The Dirt: Wide gravel river flats and smooth dirt tracks replace the cramped wet bedrock of the lower gorge.
- Arrival in Manang (3,519 m): Rolling into Manang feels like stepping back centuries. Flat-roofed stone buildings, ancient prayer wheels, and strings of prayer flags flap against a backdrop of ice-falls and snow peaks.

3. High-Altitude Loops: Khangsar, Gangapurna & Green Lake
Riding above 3,500 meters demands proper acclimatization. Rather than sitting still, this rest day offers some of the most spectacular dual-sport exploration in the entire Himalayas.

Gangapurna Lake & Bojo Gompa
Just outside the main settlement lies the striking glacial bowl of Gangapurna Lake. The turquoise mineral water reflects the hanging glaciers above. Riding up toward Bojo Gompa provides an unobstructed vantage point overlooking the entire Manang valley floor.
The Track to Khangsar
Pushing further west toward Khangsar, the staging village for Tilicho Lake, the trail narrows into high, sweeping mountain single-track. The thin air means your bike breathes differently, requiring mindful gear selection and steady roll-on momentum.

Alpine Serenity at Green Lake
Navigating the side tracks through the pine fringes near Upper Pisang leads to the quiet solitude of Green Lake. Here, surrounded by chortens and jagged peaks, you get the rare feeling of having the Himalayas entirely to yourself.

4. The Descent: From High Plateau to Historic Bandipur
Riding downhill back along the Marsyangdi gives you a whole new angle on the gorge. With altitude dropping rapidly, engines regain full power, and the technical sections flow with greater rhythm.
After clearing the rocky trail back to Besisahar, the tour breaks away from the highway. It climbs the switchbacks to the preserved Newari trading town of Bandipur.
With its vehicle-free stone streets, 18th-century architecture, and wide valley balconies, Bandipur shines. It is the ideal place to celebrate a successful high-altitude traverse before heading back to Kathmandu.
Essential Rider Tips for the Manang Route
- Permits are Mandatory: You are riding through the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). You will need your ACAP permit and TIMS card stamped at entry checkpoints like Besisahar and Dharapani.
- Layer for Extreme Climates: Lower valleys can reach 20°C, while early mornings in Manang often plunge below 0°C. Thermal base layers, windproof shells, and waterproof off-road boots are non-negotiable.
- Altitude Awareness: Ride hydrated and avoid over-exertion during your first night above 3,000 meters.
